Consider the following questions:

  • Where have you learned about the scientific method before? What kinds of phenomenon was it used to explain?
  • Psychological science, as with other sciences, is based on empirical data – objective, tangible evidence that can be observed time and time again, regardless of who is observing. What are some other “ways of knowing” that people use to explain different phenomena?
  • Which research strategy – or combination of strategies – seems to be the most advantageous, in your opinion? Why?
  • As mentioned in the text, many psychology studies are conducted on college students. In what ways are students at your university similar to or different from your average adult in the United States? How do they compare to students at large research universities, like CSU Fort Collins or CU Boulder?
  • Learning about the field of psychology means learning about the research and statistical methods used to understand human behavior. How do you feel about this content area after reading this chapter? Do you find it interesting, challenging, surprising, etc.?
